FileVault is the macOS disk encryption technology that ensures that your data can't be read by someone else. This means that if you lose your Mac and you have turned on FileVault, your information stays safe.
Step-by-step guide
To check if your Mac's disk is encrypted:
- Open System Preferences... from the Apple Menu
- Choose Security & Privacy
- On the FileVault tab, check to see if FileVault is turned on for the disk... is showing (as per the screenshot below).
You can turn FileVault on if you have administrative privileges. Remember to keep the FileVault Recovery Key safe; you will need this in future if you ever need to un-encrypt your disk and have forgotten the password you use to login with.
